Leadership is well studied and its impact is felt throughout the organization. No one disputes that leadership is critical to all industries and organizational departments, from healthcare to manufacturing, public and private, human resources to sales and marketing. As it is essential to all departments, many good tools are available to measure leadership. For example, two reliable and valid measures of leadership are the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and the Leadership Practices Inventory.
But what are companies doing with that leadership data? Would it be of interest to see how leadership relates to metrics such as organizational commitment, sales, project success, team building, and net revenue? Of course it would. A company can only deal with issues once the roots of these issues are identified.
We propose that to get more out of your data companies need to examine the relationship of leadership to other domains. There are practical implications for companies to assess and analyze leadership metrics. Leadership studies can reveal important predictors of particular metrics, as well as outcomes of certain organization behaviors.
